These pictures display Plato's book "The Republic," which was based on justice and political ideas. In this book, Plato wrote about his ideas of politics including the rule of law and the concept of tyranny.

Trace the development of the Western political ideas of the rule of law and illegitimacy of tyranny, using selections from Plato’s Republic and Aristotle’s Politics.

Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Politics

Both believed that the rule of law was a protection from tyranny.  It provided safety for the nation itself. The Rule of Law assigns law above all, even people of power.

Tyranny occurs when a ruler takes over the nation and corruptly expands resources in his own interest, instead of the interest of the nation.

The Republic focused on the idea of justice. Plato supported government structure of aristocracy. He believed that tyranny was "fourth and worst disorder of a state" Tyrannical rule lacks order and reason, which Plato did not favor much.

These pictures display Aristotle's writing, "The Politics" which similar to Plato's focuses on politics, however, Aristotle also focused on physics and scientific ideas. Aristotle's Politics included various types of the constitution the rule of law, and tyranny. Aristotle's "Physics" included his ideas on physics.

Aristotle's Politics

Similar to Plato, Aristotle focused on politic. However, his writings included directions for rulers instead of ideas.  Aristotle focused on the formation of Constitutions based on political structures. He also opposed tyranny because it was a cruel and unjust act.  He supported the idea of laws, and how laws should be above a'll.  He supports a polity, a government of the combination of oligarchy and democracy.

Greek philosophy of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were the foundations of Western Civilizations. Greek art, poetry, drama, and architecture was seen in Western literature. Greeks ideas such as politics, monarchy, oligarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, and democracy that were common in the West, are also known to us today.
